If you want to take a trip back in time, you may want to visit the Historic Downtown of Cedar City. This delightful downtown district is comprised of historic, early 20th century buildings that have been pristinely restored to create a picture-perfect Main Street and downtown area. Filled with antique shops, old-fashioned soda shops and even hip restaurants, the Historic Downtown is the place to stay when you visit Cedar City – at least that's what locals told me. So I took their advice and booked a great last-minute hotel in the Historic Downtown district of Cedar City through my HotelTonight app. After a couple of minutes on the app, I had found the perfect hotel in the heart of this historic district, so I booked it right then and there and immediately started packing my bags for my weekend trip to Utah.
Historic Sites
Downtown Cedar City takes great pride in its rich history, and this is evident no matter where you look. There are 172 buildings in Cedar City, and 104 of these buildings are considered historic. Some of the most historic sites in the downtown area include the Old Post Office, the Union Pacific Railroad Depot and the Rock Church. Locals will tell you that the gem of this historic district is the Rock Church, a colorful, ornate building that was constructed in the 1930s. The building was specially crafted from local materials and donated labor, which is why locals consider it such an important landmark for their town.
Main Street Park
The roots of Main Street Park date from 1886, so the area is a central part of the daily life and culture of Cedar City locals. Originally named Liberty Park, Main Street Park boasts beautiful, lush lawns and impressive trees that are over 100 years old. This park is where locals gather to exercise, play sports, enjoy picnics and simply enjoy the charm of their town. I found myself in Main Street Park several times during the weekend, as it was close to my hotel and provided a picturesque area to walk and enjoy the lovely weather.
Dining and Shopping
If you want to enjoy Cedar City's best dining and shopping, you simply must visit the Historic Downtown. This compact downtown area is home to the city's most popular restaurants and shops, which is one of the main reasons why it's such an ideal location for visitors to stay. Since I was staying at a hotel in downtown Cedar City, I was able to walk everywhere, whether I was looking for a good restaurant or for an outdoor apparel shop.
