Fort Worth, Texas is a very large city that a lot of people don't know a lot about, mostly because of its more famous next-door neighbor. That's just fine with the people who live there, or so I've been told by people who have spent time in Fort Worth. I hadn't until relatively recently, and what I saw intrigued me quite a bit. Unfortunately, I did not have the time wanted to be able to do some exploring of the area, as I was there for work and only had time for a couple of quick dinners before flying home immediately after my last meeting. I got to go again recently, and this time I was going to do things different. I booked my return flight for 24 hours after I was done working, and I was going to choose one neighborhood to explore so that I wouldn't fall into the trap of trying to see too much too quickly. I chose TCU-West Cliff. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, either, as I always travel with HotelTonight. The Campus
Of course, the centerpiece of this little community is the campus of Texas Christian University, or TCU. It's a lovely school that isn't as big as it seems to outsiders, who may be misled by the fact that their football team is a national power. That status is reflected by the beautiful stadium in which the Horned Frogs play. I walked around the campus for a while and talked to a few students about what it was like there. I'm not sure I ever encountered a friendlier group of people, all of whom were sure they were in their proper place.
The Zoo
I had no idea that I would encounter a zoo on my day of exploring this beautiful neighborhood, but once I saw the sign up the road I simply had to go take a look. Not only is there a zoo there, but it's a top-notch zoo with animals on display from every continent on the planet. I noticed that unlike a lot of the bigger zoos around the country, this one was primarily populated by locals that day, which speaks to its quality and of course to the nature of this community that they support it so strongly.
The Food
When you're on or near a college campus, you're going to encounter a lot of different types of food. You'll find low-cost, high-volume options and you'll find higher-end choices nearby. I wanted a nice Texas steak, and that's exactly what I found after a student recommended the place. The steak was big--which is proper in Texas--and it was delicious. The meat was cooked perfectly and the mushrooms that covered it made the whole flavor.
