This lively neighborhood bustles with students and creative types, so there is no shortage of entertainment and activities, which is why it's one of the best places to stay (in my opinion) during a visit to Pittsburgh. When I traveled to Pittsburgh for a recent business trip, I chose to book a hotel in Oakland Pittsburgh so that I could immerse myself in one of the city's hottest neighborhoods. Universities
There's a reason why Oakland teems with so much youthful spirit and energy – it's the epicenter for education in Pittsburgh. Oakland is home to a number of major universities, such as the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and UPMC. While staying in Oakland, I decided to get to know the neighborhood and its universities by wandering through some of the beautiful campuses and the surrounding areas, which are full of students, lively bars and cheap eateries. Plus, if you're an architecture lover, you'll swoon over the architectural gems – like the French Gothic Revival Heinz Chapel – that you'll find all over the campuses.
Schenley Farms
The Schenley Farms Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and this beautiful old neighborhood is home to dozens of cultural or institutional buildings as well as beautiful old homes. Today, the Schenley Farms Historic District is viewed as a living museum of the 20th century architecture, and it's the perfect neighborhood for a leisurely afternoon stroll. I took many walks through Schenley Farms during my short weekend stay in Pittsburgh, and whenever I return to Pittsburgh, this will definitely be one of the first areas I visit.
Museums
Given how many prestigious universities and cultural centers are scattered throughout the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, it only makes sense that this area is also home to plenty of great museums. If you're in the mood to experience some of Pittsburgh's best museums, you will definitely find yourself in Oakland at some point. Some of the neighborhood's museum offerings include the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, the Stephen Foster Memorial Museum and the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum.
