HotelTonight – Great Deals on Hotels in Manchester, NH
As one of the prettiest little gems in New England, Manchester is a city well worth a visit for anyone who loves history, art and the warm, welcoming culture of a small town. Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire, but don't let that fool you – it doesn't have the vibe of a bustling metropolis. Manchester is the perfect blend of an urban center and a small town, and I felt right at home as soon as I stepped foot in the city. Even though I only had a day and a half to explore Manchester, I still felt like I got a great beat on the city and its culture. My spur-of-the-moment trip to Manchester was inspired by the fact that I wanted to escape to New England to see some of its famous fall foliage. I found a great last-minute airfare and checked my HotelTonight app to browse hotels in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Downtown
Whenever I travel, I prefer to stay in a neighborhood where I can walk to restaurants, shops and attractions, which is why I was happy to be staying in a hotel in downtown Manchester. This urban center is a great neighborhood for pedestrians, and I was able to walk to a number of terrific eateries, shops and bars. Staying in downtown Manchester gave me a great feel for the heart and soul of the town, and I was surprised to discover that it was trendy and hip while still maintaining a warm, small-town feel. I ate nearly every one of my meals downtown while in Manchester, and I didn't even get to try half of the restaurants that really piqued my interest. I was surprised to discover that Manchester is quite a foodie town.
Victory Park
This historic district centered around the beautiful Victory Park, and it's one of the most desirable neighborhoods among locals. Victory Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it's home to a number of beautiful historic buildings, such as the Manchester City Library and the Manchester Institute of Arts and Science building. So if you love gorgeous old architecture like I do, Victory Park is well worth a visit. Strolling through these lovely historic streets was one of the highlights of my time in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Gaslight District
Apparently, Manchester's Gaslight District has undergone a renaissance in recent years. This neighborhood used to feel a bit disconnected from the main streets of downtown, but recent renovations have made it feel like a pretty, desirable district of its own. I enjoyed wandering down pedestrian-friendly streets like Elm Street, Auburn Street and Old Granite. I could tell that the neighborhood is up-and-coming, as it had an exciting, unique energy I didn't see in other neighborhoods downtown.
The Amoskeag Fishways
Although I wasn't in Manchester for salmon season, locals still suggested I visit the Amoskeag Fishways. During the prime season in May and June, visitors can come and watch fish like carp, shad and salmon jump upriver on the fish ladder. If you're in Manchester at any other time of the year, you can still visit the Fishways to learn about the process of the arduous annual swim upstream.
The Ballpark
Manchester doesn't have a major league baseball team, but that doesn't mean locals don't love catching a game every now and then. Located in downtown Manchester is the Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, home of the AA baseball team the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. I wasn't in Manchester at the right time of the year to see the salmon, but I was in town at the right time of the year to see the Fisher Cats. I joined the locals and caught an evening home game, and I swear I wouldn't have been able to tell this was an AA game if I hadn't known about it. The excitement and energy of the crowd made it feel like a major league game.
