The metropolitan area of Detroit is really an interesting mosaic of a lot of different communities that are home to people of all nationalities and backgrounds. While a lot has happened to Detroit over the past 20 years or so, this is still a city that remains strong, and it continues to move forward, even on the heels of taking a few steps backward. I travel to Detroit quite a bit, and in recent years as the city has recovered from the recession, I have made it a point to make some time to see a different part of the city whenever I'm there. On my last trip, that happened by chance. I had a full day of meetings on Thursday and was set to fly out on Friday morning. I got a call on Thursday morning telling me that my entire day had been canceled. I had 24 hours to myself, if I wanted. I did, but I'd have to find my own lodging. That wouldn't be a problem with HotelTonight, so I chose to visit Southfield. I'd book a Southfield, MI hotel room as soon as I was done exploring for the day.
The Arts
One of the first things I noticed about Southfield, as I pulled into the community, was that it was very dedicated to the arts. I saw more than one theater in the middle of town, and the entire area had a bit of a tasteful, artsy flair with some of the building decorations and the like. I spotted an art gallery and decided to go in. I'm glad I did, as this was a wonderful place with more fine paintings than I could even remember. I spent a couple of hours there walking around and enjoying the works.
The Shopping
I love to shop. Everywhere I go, I want to go shopping somewhere. I find that this is not only a great way to get to know a place a bit, but it's also a fun way to interact with people. I found a mall right in the middle of town and spent several hours walking through all sorts of different stores, large and small. I spoke to a lot of different people while there, and I was taken aback by how friendly and helpful everyone was. I bought more things than I should have, but that's because I was having so much fun.
The Cuisine
One of the ladies I spoke to at the mall told me about this great Creole place where she liked to eat whenever possible. I love Creole food, so I was in as soon as she told me about it. I walked in and the place was relatively plain and understated in terms of its decor, but that was fine with me, as the food was fantastic. I had the red beans and rice, macaroni and cheese and fried chicken, and everything was cooked to perfection.
