I have been driving through Northern California for many years because of my job, and I've always enjoyed my time there. The only regret I have is that I rarely, if ever, have any time for myself before I have to rush off to the airport to catch my flight home. That means that my experiences in this beautiful part of the world have largely been limited to meetings and meals. I wanted to change all of that, but never fully realized how it was possible. On my last trip there, I had the entire last day of meetings cancel due to a scheduling conflict my clients did not notice until the last minute. That gave me the opportunity I was looking for, as I was allowed to stay that extra day and take my scheduled flight. However, I would have to find my own lodging for the evening. I decided to go explore Santa Rosa, as I had heard a lot about it over the years but never done much more than driven through it. The Wine
Chances are, if you drink and like wine, you've tried at least something from Santa Rosa. This is one of the wine capitals of California, making it one of the wine capitals of the world. It was surprising to think that as I pulled into this community of only around 175,000 people. Regardless, I saw signs for wine shops and wineries everywhere, and I decided to stop and shop a bit before going to see how all of this wine came to be. I bought a bit more than I should have, but it was a fun experience.
The Wineries
Now that I had seen the finished product, I wanted to see how it got to that point. There is a plethora of wineries near town, but I chose one that made a brand of wine that my spouse and I enjoy. I had never been to a winery, and I was fascinated by how all of this is done. We walked through massive rooms where wine was being fermented, and, of course, we wound up in a tasting room where we got to sample what was about to be bottled.
The Dining
I had heard about a really good Italian place when I was at the winery, and I was in the mood for some pasta and vino. I got there and saw that this was a very rustic, very attractive little restaurant. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs along with some garlic bread, and they served me what I considered the perfect dish. The meatballs were tasty and tender, the pasta was perfectly cooked and the marinara was nice and spicy. The local wine made it all come together, and it was a great meal.
