When I drive in Northern California, I like to veer off the main highways sometimes and take different routes. It's a way for me to refresh myself and get my train of thought focused on different things. That's particularly useful when I've got a lot on my mind. Not to mention, the landscape in that part of the world is stunningly beautiful. When I've done this, I've noticed that even those less-used roads are dotted with smaller communities along the way. I've always wondered what life must be like in these hamlets, especially those situated in the Napa Valley. Thanks to a sequence of events that played out recently, I got to find out for the first time. I got a call early one morning that my day of meetings had been canceled. I was driving on a smaller highway at the time. I was near a town called Rutherford, California, and I decided to just stop there and spend the next 24 hours exploring. I wasn't concerned about finding a Rutherford, CA hotel room in the least, as I always travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd book a room when it was time.
The Size
The first thing I noticed when I pulled into Rutherford was how small it was. I looked it up right then and there, and the reported population is 164. That actually made sense, as the city itself was only a few blocks in length. The size actually fit the community, though, as the entire vibe there is one of hominess and a sense of welcome to anyone who happens by. I noticed that every local who passed by me gave me a friendly look and at the very least a nod, as if to say that everyone should feel comfortable there.
The Wineries
Rutherford is the quintessential Napa Valley town. I actually wondered, as I looked around, if there were more wineries than people, as everywhere I turned there was another one. I chose a couple of them to tour, as I've done that sort of thing before. These wineries were small in terms of their corporate size, large in terms of their landmass and enormous when it came to their ability to make quality wines. I tasted a few and didn't leave either of the wineries without purchasing several bottles. I'd worry about getting them home later.
The Dining
A lady at one of the wineries told me about a local restaurant that had been doing very well for some time, so when dinnertime came that's where I went. The building itself was made of stone, and the red booths gave the interior a rustic look when coupled with the exposed wooden ceilings. I felt like a simple cheeseburger and fries would do just fine, and it did more than that. The burger was huge, cooked perfectly and smothered in cheddar. The toppings could not have been fresher.
