My family and I had embarked on a spontaneous road trip, and we ended up in Elkins around lunchtime. Elkins is the type of town you think only exists in movies, as its picturesque buildings and idyllic streets are tucked away in a beautiful forest. The downtown area of Elkins looks like it's from a painting, and I certainly couldn't imagine a more perfect small town downtown if I tried. In downtown Elkins, you'll find shops, restaurants and entertainment, just like in any big city. In Elkins, however, it's just on a smaller scale, and you can walk almost anywhere in a matter of minutes.
The Arts
You may be surprised to learn that Elkins actually has a vibrant arts scene, but once you see the surrounding natural beauty, you'll realize that it makes sense. This is a type of setting that fuels creativity, which is why Elkins has been named one of the 100 best small arts communities in the country. To experience the arts scene in Elkins, we visited the Mountain Arts District, the Old Brick Playhouse and the Randolph County Community Arts Center.
The Great Outdoors
You can't visit Elkins without exploring the surrounding nature – there's just too much beautiful scenery to ignore. Elkins is smack dab in the middle of beautiful forest, and nearby you'll find everything from ski resorts and mountain biking to whitewater rivers and golf courses. We spent an entire day hiking, biking and fishing in the gorgeous national forest, and after that we really understood why Elkins locals are so proud to live in such a beautiful place.

If you like the great outdoors, you'll certainly never be bored, and the town itself is full of energy and charm.
