HotelTonight – Belltown Seattle Hotels at the Ready
I've long been in love with Seattle. I've never lived there because my job requires me to be somewhere else, but I'm always excited when I get to take a business trip to the Emerald City. For years, I felt as though I was not getting to spend the time there that I wanted to because I always flew in for work, did what needed to be done and then flew out. Recently, however, I decided to make an adjustment that would provide me with the opportunity to explore Seattle on a deeper level. I simply book my return flight for 24 hours after I'm done working there if it's at all possible. If it is, I pick out a neighborhood in the city where I haven't spent much time and spend that entire day exploring it with no time pressure and the ability to focus on that small part of the city. The Interesting History
In the early part of the 20th Century, few people spent time in Belltown. It sat on top of an extremely steep hill, but the city changed all of that about 100 years ago. They downgraded the slope of the hill, and it became a center for business. A couple of generations ago, local politicians changed the zoning laws and allowed for high-rises to be built there. Since then, Belltown has been a bustling, vibrant place filled with people, mostly younger in age.
The Culture
When a large number of younger people move into an area, as was the case with Belltown, you can expect that neighborhood to become quite hip and happening. Since the zoning laws changed here, that's exactly what's happened. This is an area filled with students and young professionals, and you see things like art galleries, music shops and performance venues all over the place. It's a very cool vibe, and the trendiness is accepting as opposed to stand-offish. I walked through a few galleries and was quite impressed with the local art scene.
The Food
Even the food is hip in Belltown. During the day, I noticed quite a few food trucks and wondered how many different countries were represented by the respective cuisines. That night, I wanted some gastropub food, as I also wanted a craft beer or two with my dinner. I found a place that someone had mentioned to me earlier in the day, and they had this peanut butter burger that was fantastic. The creamy peanut butter mixed extremely well with the choice beef and with the delicious beer. I was quite happy with my choice.
