Northern Liberties (or NoLibs, as it's known by locals) has become a hub for Philadelphia's hipsters, thus it is now one of the most creative, trendiest areas in the entire city. Located just north of Old City, NoLibs is ideally located, and it's easy to get into Center City on foot or by public transportation, so it's a great place for locals to live as well as for tourists to stay. During my recent trip to Philadelphia, I decided that I didn't want to stay in a tourist-centric area, but rather in an authentic neighborhood beloved by locals. Ultimately, I landed on Northern Liberties, a historic district that is currently booming with new developments and a young, exciting energy. The Piazza

Locals don't just love the Piazza for its cool aesthetic, though--they love it because it has become the beating heart of the neighborhood. There's always something going on in the Piazza, whether it's the farmers' market, a fashion show or a concert. This is the place to be when you're in NoLibs.
Liberties Walk
Running through NoLibs is Liberties Walk, a four-block stretch full of independently owned stores and hip local eateries. This charming shopping district is where you'll find most of the excitement and energy in Northern Liberties, which is why it's such a favorite among locals. During the day, you'll see locals popping in and out of the various shops on Liberties Walk. In the evening, you'll walk past crowded restaurants and bars, full of locals enjoying a drink and some good food after work.
The River
One of the borders of Northern Liberties is the Delaware River, so NoLibs residents have easy access to the waterfront. Philadelphians certainly take advantage of their picturesque waterfront, as it's a popular spot for exercising and simply enjoying a beautiful day. Even though I was only in Philadelphia for a few days, I made it a point to enjoy the beautiful Delaware River waterfront every day during my stay. I went for my morning runs along the river, just as I would if I actually lived in NoLibs.
