HotelTonight – Short North Columbus Hotels
To many people who have not been there or who have not spent a lot of time there, Columbus may seem like a Rustbelt city that is known for manufacturing, hard work and fun on the weekends. While these are and have been elements of Columbus, there is so much more to appreciate here that it's hard to describe in one conversation. Columbus is a thriving, beautiful place with something for everyone to enjoy. I know this because I've been coming here for years for work, and not too long ago I decided to get to know Columbus by way of exploring one neighborhood at a time. What I would do is book my return flight for 24 hours after I was supposed to fly home. This gave me an entire day to explore one small community within the city. I like this approach, because it removes any pressure related to time and lets me dig into a place. On my most recent trip, I chose to explore the neighborhood of Short North. The Shopping
As soon as you set foot in Short North, you know you're in a shopper's paradise. It's not as though everything is some national or worldwide chain either, as what I saw were tons of different small shops, boutiques and the like that were family-owned. I like that, as you always sense a bit of a different vibe when you're in these places. The people are there to serve you and to help you find what you're looking for. I enjoyed walking through quite a few of them and wound up making a few purchases.
The Artistic Influence
One of the things that I have discovered more than once during my explorations of different parts of Columbus is that the influence of artists if felt strongly throughout this city. That is certainly the case in Short North. Even the exteriors of buildings are decorated tastefully, including things like little touches of color to enormous murals that add to the overall culture of the community. I walked through a few studios as well, enjoying the paintings that I saw and watching in amazement as sculptures took shape right in front of me.
The Cuisine
In Short North, you could almost point to any country on the global map and find a restaurant there that serves its cuisine. For whatever reason, I was in the mood for Mexican food, and a shop owner told me about this place that served incredible chimichangas. I wanted to find out for myself, and as it turns out, she was wrong--they were not incredible, but rather they were transcendent. I ate mine gleefully and enjoyed my beer that came with it.
