There are certain cities in the United States that, in recent years, have been stuck with a negative reputation, fair or not. Perhaps the city with a reputation that took the biggest hit during the economic struggles of the past decade was Detroit, Michigan. Make no mistake – this historic city was hit very hard by the recession. However, the people of Detroit have worked tirelessly to bring the Motor City back to prominence, and it appears to be happening almost ahead of schedule. I was there for work recently, and I wanted to take some time to get to know at least one of the neighborhoods in the city. I do that because I find that it's a better way to get to know an area as a whole, as any metropolitan area is the sum of its smaller communities. I chose to spend an extra 24 hours I had before flying home in the community of Troy. I had heard good things and wanted to see it for myself. The Business Community
As I pulled into Troy, I was almost surprised that I had never been there for any work meetings. There are office buildings all over the place, so this is clearly a part of Detroit that, regardless of the recent past, was humming right along economically. I saw signs for Fortune 500 companies that everyone would recognize and signs for what were obviously small, locally-owned businesses of all different types. I also saw a lot of professional people walking around, hustling to their next appointment, as though they had no time to stop and enjoy the beautiful day.
The Families
As I ventured a bit outside of the busy business district, it soon became clear why I had heard that Troy had been voted one of the best places in Michigan in which to raise a family. There were very nice schools that dotted the landscape and there was a lot of clean and open space for children and pets to use. I walked through one of the local parks there and saw nothing but younger families pushing strollers and walking with dogs. The neighborhood surrounding the park was very nice and very well maintained. This was home to a lot of young parents.
The Cuisine
I talked to a few families in the park, and more than one group mentioned an Italian restaurant that had earned a loyal following. I decided to give it a shot, as I wanted a nice, heavy dinner given my level of hunger at the time. This was a place that was nicely decorated, with wooden tables and chairs and a nice bar. I had the gnocchi for dinner, and it was amazing. It was hearty, tasty and served with a pesto sauce that added a lot of flavor.
