The Coachella Valley sits in the middle of the desert, but it's much more than just a big stretch of desert. There are all sorts of communities here, and every one of them has something unique to offer. I had spent a lot of time in places like Palm Springs and Palm Desert over the years, as I travel quite a bit for my job. One thing I hadn't seen much of, though, is the communities that exist for the locals whose families have been in this area for generations. The retirement and resort communities are all quite lovely and I've always enjoyed them, but I wanted to get a sense of what family life was like in this part of the world. I got my opportunity on my last trip to the desert, as I had an entire day of meetings cancel at the very last minute. I had 24 hours to do with what I pleased, and I decided that I'd spend that time exploring the community of Cathedral City. I wasn't worried about lodging, either, as I travel with HotelTonight. The Hiking
I was in Cathedral City in the middle of winter, so it was a perfectly sunny and pleasant day with no real heat present. When I got out of my car, I thought about how it would be a perfect day for a hike. It was then that I saw a sign for a trail and realized that it was meant to be. I grabbed my shoes out of the car and immediately jumped onto the path. I hiked around for about two hours, taking in all of the stunning desert scenery that surrounded me. It was a gorgeous hike.
The Ice
After getting back into town, I had a quick snack and kept exploring. As I drove down one of the main roads, I saw a sign for an ice rink. Really? An ice rink in the middle of the desert? I had to see this for myself. I walked in and, sure enough, there was a full ice rink right there with people skating around. I went to the nearby window and yes, I could rent skates and do some turns. I did just that, as I wanted to be able to tell people that I went ice skating in the desert.
The Dining
After all that exercise, I wanted to have a really nice dinner. I heard about a supper club that attracted people of all ages, so I went there. It was a true old-school dining experience. There was a stage show and the entire atmosphere was fun. I ordered the steak and it was delectable. It was cooked perfectly and the garlic mashed potatoes that came with it were a great flavor complement. I enjoyed a bit of the entertainment and decided to call it a night.
