Mineral Wells is a small town located in Wood County, West Virginia. With a population of around 2,000, this town boasts a very tight-knit community feel, and it's a unique place to visit, especially if you live in a major city like I do. Every once in awhile, I feel like I need to get out of my city bubble and experience places I normally wouldn't visit, and that's what led me to West Virginia. Just outside the small town of Mineral Wells is Parkersburg, the third-largest city in the state of West Virginia. Mineral Wells locals come to Parkersburg when they want big city amenities, like hip restaurants and entertainment. I spent an evening exploring Parkersburg, which I noticed has a surprisingly robust arts and culture scene. There are number of great hotels and performing arts centers in Parkersburg, and there are also plenty of historical buildings to admire as you wander through the city.
Marietta
Since Mineral Wells is located at the edge of the state, it's just a quick drive into a completely different state – Ohio. Since I was in the area, I decided to pop over to Marietta, Ohio, a city with roots that date from the 1780s. Home to the liberal arts school, Marietta College, and a number of historical monuments, Marietta is a city you should visit if you want to learn about the history and culture of the region.
Vienna
While still a small town, Vienna is significantly larger than Mineral Wells, so it provides the atmosphere of a small town while still offering a number of amenities and attractions. Vienna is home to beautiful old mansions and historical parks, which is why I decided to stop for a few hours in Vienna on my way back to Mineral Wells. While many of these towns have similar atmospheres, each one has its own distinctive culture, and I enjoyed discovering each one for myself.

Even though I was only in West Virginia for a couple of days, I felt that I got a great feel for the region I visited. After spending two days seeing West Virginia through the eyes of a local, I had come to understand the lifestyle and culture of Mineral Wells residents, and I was so glad I had the chance to get off-the-beaten path and experience new things.
