Residents of Huntington, West Virginia have the best of both worlds – the charm and tight-knit community of a small town and the bustle and excitement of a city. Huntington was once built around the railroad system, but now it's a vibrant city that boasts a diverse economy. Because there are many jobs in and around Huntington, the city is thriving, and it's impossible to ignore its infectious energy. I traveled to Huntington for work, and I ended up extending my stay because I loved the town so much. To book a hotel in Huntington, West Virginia, I simply relied on HotelTonight. With a hotel room waiting for me in the heart of Huntington, I headed to the hotel to check in so that I could make the most of my stay in this idyllic West Virginia town.
Downtown
Downtown Huntington is a national historic district, so there are beautifully maintained historic buildings everywhere you look, from the Huntington City Hall to the Trinity Episcopal Church to the Love Hardware Building. Many of these buildings are over a hundred years old, and they boast a rich, storied history that Huntington locals are very proud of. My favorite building downtown was without a doubt the Keith-Albee Theatre, a famed Vaudeville palace from the 1920s, which will impress any architecture lover.
Ritter Park
Anybody who loves history and old architecture will love Huntington, especially neighborhoods like Ritter Park, which is a national historic district in Huntington's South Side. Most of the buildings were erected in the early 1900s, so you'll see homes in all types of styles, from Bungalow/craftsman and Colonial Revival to Tudor Revival. Some of the most notable historic buildings Ritter Park (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) include the Cammack House, the Ritter Park Apartments and the Marshal University President's House.
The University
Huntington is home to Marshall University (you may know about this college from the movie, "We Are Marshall"), and the student population imbues Huntington with a lively energy. I would certainly recommend taking a stroll through Marshall's beautiful, historic campus while in Huntington, simply because the school and the surrounding neighborhood of Old Main are some of the most picturesque parts of this town, and they will give you a great feel for what daily life is like for Huntington locals.
