When I drive through the Green Mountains of Vermont, I always find myself wondering if I could live there and no one would even notice. There is so much out there that appears all but untouched by humans, I have to think it was possible. I also have to think that I'm hardly the first person to ever have that idea. Regardless, that's what it remained – an idea – as I am a traveling salesperson and never really have time to stop and explore this part of the world. That's because I'm always moving from one destination to another as quickly as possible. However, on my last trip through Vermont, I got a call that I wouldn't be needed at my meetings scheduled for the next day, as one of the people was going to be out ill. That meant that if I wanted, I could take the next 24 hours for myself. This was my chance – I was going to choose a small community in the Green Mountains and explore it. The Hiking
If I had been there in winter, I may not have wanted to stop as I didn't have ski equipment. However, I was there in the summer, so I was all set to get out and see the mountains while they were green instead of white. There were hiking trails near town, so I jumped on one of them and lost myself for hours in the wilderness. There were trees everywhere, little babbling brooks all around and forest animals of all sizes running around as if they didn't have a care in the world.
The Shopping
Even though fewer than 1,000 people call Killington home, there is a lot to do and see there because of the skiing in the winter. As such, there were all sorts of little shops around, and I adore walking through these types of places. The knickknacks available in some of them were things I just had to have, and I really enjoyed talking to the locals who worked there. This is a great way to get to know a community. I found out that a lot of the people who live there come from families that had been there for generations, and that explained the pride I felt from them.
The Dining
There were also a lot of dining choices in Killington, and I was quite happy about that. I had heard about an Italian restaurant that was popular with the locals, and when I walked in I could smell the food. It was a dark, wooden place but that was fine with me. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and was amazed at how good it was. The meatballs were perfectly spiced and cooked and the pasta was the perfect texture. I ate happily.
