Driving in South Carolina is always an adventure for me. I feel like the longer you drive, the more interesting things you get to see. If you keep driving in an eastbound direction, you'll see the Atlantic Ocean. If you keep driving the other way, you'll see the true Old South in its purest and most beautiful form. As a traveling salesperson, I love driving through the Palmetto State, because it's always a chance to reset things a bit in my mind and relax while surrounded by beauty. The only regret I have is that my driving always has a distinct point to it and not much time attached. That means that I never have time to stop and get to know any of the communities I pass along the highway. That all changed recently when I was driving near the coast. I found out that my meetings that day were canceled, so suddenly I had 24 hours to do with as I pleased. I chose to spend those 24 hours exploring Mt. Pleasant. The Waterfront
Mt. Pleasant is situated on the coast, which means that a lot of its beauty is tied to the ocean. I can say with certainty after seeing it that there is more beauty there than I ever would have guessed before seeing it. I walked through a couple of different parks that were built with waterfront views and nature in general in mind, and I spent hours taking photos and talking to people who were out and about enjoying the beautiful day. The waterfront sets the tone for the lifestyle in Mt. Pleasant.
The History
There is a lot of military history in and around Mt. Pleasant, and being the history buff that I am, I wanted to see some of it. The first shots of the Civil Ware were fired at Fort Sumter, and today a national monument exists that commemorates what occurred more than 150 years ago. It was stunning to see firsthand where one of the darkest periods in our country's history all started, as it all hits me differently actually seeing it as opposed to reading about it. I was also surprised to see so many locals touring it that day.
The Dining
When I'm in a coastal place, I'm going to look for local seafood for dinner. I talked to a few people throughout the day who told me about a locally-owned restaurant that served just that. I walked in and was stunned by the views of the coast from the tables, and I was even more stunned with how delicious the red snapper was. It was served on top of a pile of local vegetables and covered in a creamy sauce that I wish I could replicate, as it brought the entire dish together.
