HotelTonight – St. Helens, Oregon Hotels
Oregon is a land of wonder. It's a place where you can go almost anywhere and find almost anything. If you want to see some truly unique, rocky coastline, you can do that there. If you want to spend some time in an ultra-modern, forward-thinking city, you can do that there. If you want to see what life is like on an enormous ranch, just head in an eastbound direction off of Interstate 5. I've seen a lot of these aspects of Oregon, and I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them. What I have not seen to this point is a small town just outside of Portland that offers all of these options. On my last business trip to Oregon, I wound up with 24 hours to myself after a series of circumstances led to this opening. I didn't want to just fly home, so I picked out one of these places I had yet to see to spend my time there. I chose the community of St. Helens. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay, either, as I travel with HotelTonight. I'd book a St. Helens hotel room as soon as I needed one.
The Town
St. Helens is a small community of around 13,000 people. As I pulled into town, I wasn't sure if this was a mountain town, a seaside town or something else. It was definitely quaint and lovely, but as it turns out it really wasn't a town that fit a particular template. It's a welcoming, warm community where people all seem to know each other, you are greeted with a smile as you walk down the street and any questions you ask of locals are answered with honest, useful information. I got a good feeling about this place within the first hour of being there.
The Riverfront District
St. Helens sits at the confluence of four different rivers about 30 miles north of Portland. One of those rivers is the Columbia, one of the largest in the world. I didn't know this until I got there, but the Riverfront District in St. Helens is so unique and renowned that it's on the National Register of Historic Places. I immediately saw why when I got there, as the area was filled with lovely little shops and cafes along with a few art galleries. The residents there seemed to really enjoy this part of town.
The Dining
There were a ton of different options for dinner in St. Helens, and for some reason I had a strong hankering for pizza. I heard about a place that does it New York-style, and I wanted to see what that was all about. The place itself was not fancy, but rather unremarkable in its appearance. That was fine with me, as the pizza itself was quite remarkable. The crust was very thin but the toppings were quite thick. Somehow, the pieces all held together. It was delicious.
