I have been coming to Charlotte, North Carolina since I was a child. My parents used to come visit my mother's cousin's family here, and I always had a wonderful time with their children, who were about my age. Since then, everyone has either passed on or scattered about the country living their lives, which meant that until recently, it had been decades since I had seen that lovely city. I recently took a new job, though, and it brings me to Charlotte regularly. I was thrilled about that development, but also a bit frustrated that I never had time to look around for myself. On my last few trips, I've been booking my return for 24 hours after my work obligations were complete so I could have some time to explore things. On my most recent trip, I decided to spend my free day in the neighborhood of Elizabeth, near where my relatives used to live. The Sense of Community
One of the things that I remember about my childhood visits here is that it seemed at the time like everyone knew everyone else and that everyone got along quite well. That vibe remains in Elizabeth. As I walked through the neighborhood, I saw people gathering at public places and along the sidewalks just to talk with each other, sometimes in large groups. The kids played together, the adults talked and a few of them greeted me warmly as I nodded my head and said hello. It was almost as if I was visiting a neighborhood from a decade in the past.
The Park
As much as people seemed to enjoy getting together along the streets and on the sidewalks, it was a veritable town hall meeting at the local park. I think parks are a great way to get a feel for a neighborhood. This one was extremely well maintained, very clean and aesthetically pleasing, offered a lot of options for exercise and was generally quite peaceful. I walked around for a couple of hours, watching families play together and talking to people about what it's like to live in Elizabeth.
The Food
During one of my conversations with a nice couple in the park, I mentioned that I wasn't sure about where to go for dinner. They said that I had to try a Cajun place that the locals adored. I did so, and boy, were they right. I had blackened catfish that was out of this world. It was cooked perfectly and it was spicy but not too spicy. I enjoyed every bite of it along with the fresh vegetables that they steamed to go along with it.
