HotelTonight – Paynesville Hotels When You Need Them
I spend a lot of time driving along Interstate 94. I am a traveling salesperson, so in many ways the road is my office. I sit in my vehicle, think about what I'm going to do at my next meeting, reflect on my last meeting and make sure I stay abreast of everything that's happening with my job. That's pretty all-encompassing, especially when I'm also driving carefully. An unfortunate result of all of this is that for years, I've been zooming past small communities along the highway without giving them much thought. I was recently driving from Minneapolis to Fargo when I got a call that my meetings for that day in Fargo were canceled. Rather than turn around, I decided to stop somewhere nearby to explore one of these heretofore unfamiliar communities. I stopped in a place called Paynesville. I had never been there, but I wanted to see what life was like for its residents. I wasn't concerned about finding lodging, either, as I always travel with HotelTonight. I'd be able to book a hotel room in Paynesville later that day when I was ready to get some sleep.
Downtown
Paynesville is a small community, with just over 2,000 residents. If you could paint a portrait of what small-town Americana would look like, you could simply stand in the middle of Paynesville and paint what you see. The main road is lined with old, brick buildings that are extremely well maintained. The sidewalks are clean, the people are friendly and there's a familiar vibe present no matter who you are or where you're from. I was taken aback by all the smiles and greetings I got from people I saw, as they clearly knew I was there visiting. This is a happy place.
The Lake
Paynesville sits along Lake Koronis, which is one of the 10,000 lakes in the state, but it's also one that's home to a lot of recreation and industry. On the day I was there, young people were out swimming, riding their jet skis and generally having fun. There were also a lot of fishing boats out on the water, and as I found out from someone I spoke to along the shore, people have been eating out of this lake for generations. It was a beautiful scene, filled with greenery and wildlife that looked incredibly natural.
The Dining
I wanted to enjoy some local fare, and I was told about a place that was both a lounge and a restaurant where the locals like to gather. I walked in and it was big, including vaulted ceilings and a massive dining room. I sat down and ordered fried fish, as I had been thinking about the seafood all day. The fish was fantastic, as was the salad that came with it and the homemade tartar sauce. I washed it all down with a nice pilsner, enjoyed some friendly conversation and generally had an enjoyable meal.
