When I got my current job, I found out that I'd be doing a lot of traveling to Southern California. I considered that very good news, as I had never spent much time there and was excited to get to know it a bit. Over the years, I've come to know San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties pretty well, and I enjoy all of them immensely. However, given my schedule I never really had time to explore much outside of these cities and their business centers. One day I was on my way to meetings in Palm Springs, driving out of Los Angeles. I got a call that told me those meetings were canceled. I suddenly found myself with a day to myself. I could turn back to Los Angeles, keep going to Palm Springs or do something else. I chose to do something else. I had always wanted to see Big Bear Lake, so I pointed myself in that direction to spend the day and night there. Something Different
As much as I enjoy the large cities in Southern California, there is something somewhat uniform about them in that they are all large urban centers. There is always something to do, but it mostly has to do with modern activities unless you're going to the beach, as the Pacific Ocean is the main attraction in all of these places. Big Bear Lake is totally different, and I realized that as soon as I got into town. This community is like something out of a mountain town somewhere in Colorado or western Canada. The look and the feel are completely different from the rest of Southern California.
The Lake
Of course, the entire community of just over 5,000 people is built around the lake itself, which is a gorgeous blue lake that sits between mountains. I spent hours during the morning hiking around the lake, taking in its beauty in all forms. I took photos of the mountains in the background, the wildlife that was everywhere and of course the people out doing several different things including swimming, sailing, puttering around on jet skis and generally having fun. It's obvious that the people in the area appreciate this unique fixture.
The Dining
After all that hiking, I was more than ready to grab something big to eat. I heard about a local brewpub near the water that served great comfort food and poured a nice beer. I went over there to see what it was all about, and it was a classic microbrewery. The big metal vats sat in the background as I ordered a tasty IPA and a big cheeseburger. It was excellent and I ate hungrily while talking to a few of the local patrons near my table. Overall, it was a nice experience.
